The problem we solve

Viable African businesses are often refused loans because they lack collateral, a long credit record or formal assets. Lenders see risk they cannot price, so they say no.

A partial guarantee changes that calculation. If a guaranteed loan is not repaid, AGF covers part of the lender's loss. The lender can approve more loans, ask for less collateral and lend for longer.

What sets us apart

Credibility

A guarantee is only as good as the guarantor. AGF holds an AA- rating from Fitch and is backed by leading development finance institutions.

Pan-African reach

Partner lenders in 44 countries, from commercial banks to microfinance institutions and private equity funds.

More than money

We train partner lenders to assess SME risk, so lending continues well after a guarantee ends.

Our partners on the ground

We work through partner financial institutions: commercial banks, non-bank lenders, microfinance institutions and private equity funds. They face the SME; we stand behind their lending.

How we work

AGF does not lend to businesses directly. We guarantee part of what an eligible lender provides, and we strengthen the lender's ability to serve SMEs. Here is the flow of risk and funds.

ShareholdersCapital and backing AGFGuarantee + training Eligible lenderBank or institution BusinessReceives the loan No guarantee money goes to the business. The loan comes from the lender.

The lender's journey

  1. Application and eligibility reviewThe lender submits its application with identification documents and its certificate of registration, and we confirm it meets our eligibility criteria.
  2. Due diligenceWe assess the institution's governance, portfolio quality and lending capacity before offering cover.
  3. Guarantee agreementWe agree the cover, the fee and the terms. The agreement is executed only after the guarantee fee is paid.
  4. Lending to SMEsThe lender approves loans under the guarantee. It reduces its collateral demands and reaches new borrowers.
  5. Monitoring and capacity buildingWe follow portfolio performance and support the lender's staff with training and technical assistance.
  6. ClaimsIf a guaranteed loan defaults and the lender has followed the agreed recovery steps, we pay our agreed share of the loss.

Stages describe the general approach. Your guarantee agreement sets the exact terms.
